It’s Chemical Peel Season!

A chemical peel, also called a derma peel or chemexfoliation is a mild cosmetic procedure targeted at improving your skin’s feel and appearance. The process works by applying chemical solutions to your skin, which removes dead skin cells and peels off the top skin layers to reveal smoother,  firmer, and more youthful skin.

Unlike invasive dermatological treatments, chemical peels give you a more radiant look and allow skin cell regeneration without the risk of serious complications.

What to expect from a Chemical Peel Treatment

Depending on your skin’s condition and what you hope to achieve, there are different depths to chemical peel treatments you can consider. They range from light to medium and deep, each having its benefits.

Light Peel Treatment: Light chemical peels removes only the skin’s outer layer. They address dry skin, acne, fine lines, and uneven skin tones.

Medium Peel Treatment: A medium derma peel removes the outer layers of the dermis [middle skin layer], allowing penetration of active ingredients into the sebaceous skin layers. This procedure is suitable for reducing wrinkles, photoaging, and superficial scars.

Deep Peel Treatment: Deep peels target the deeper skin layers. These treatments are used in correcting deep scars, deep wrinkles, and precancerous growth.

Of the three procedures, deep chemical peels require the most recovery time, but they last longer.

Prepping for your first ever Chemical Peel?

So, you’ve never had a chemical peel before. You can do plenty of things beforehand to ensure that you have the best experience possible before, during, and after your first procedure.

Step One: Consult with your esthetician. Decide the best peel for your skin and needs. If you’re getting a deep peel, prior at-home care is necessary to ensure your skin is prepared!

You may also have to disclose any medications you’re currently on. If your medications could affect the procedure’s success, you may have to discontinue use temporarily.

Step Two: Continue using actives (AHAs, BHAs, Retinol, etc.) up to seven days before the peel, then stop! Make sure you are using only ultra-gentle skincare the week before your treatment.

Step Three: Do not use any physical exfoliation for at least a week before your appointment. Even though you may not knowingly exfoliate your skin with a scrub, you should be careful of regular skincare products that may have exfoliating properties.

Step Four: Stay hydrated the day of your appointment by drinking plenty of water, using hydrating sprays, serums, and moisturizers, and avoiding skin-drying products.

Also, keep an open mind. You’ve decided to try a chemical peel for the first time, so you’re already well on your way. The treatment is effective, but you may wait to see the full effects of the procedure.

A quick reminder, never schedule a peel right before a big event. You’ll want at least a week or two to let your skin recover so you can get all those amazing benefits!

Why everyone should try a Chemical Peel

Now that we’re well into chemical peel season, I want to share my top five reasons why everyone should try this amazing therapy at least once!

  1. Reduce Wrinkles and Fine Lines – Derma peels stimulate new collagen growth while shedding old layers of skin. Once the skin is fully healed, this new layer will appear smoother and younger!
  2. Treat Acne – Chemical peels are essentially a super-exfoliant. The formula will rid the skin’s surface of dead skin cells and unclog pores to treat active acne breakouts and reduce future breakouts.
  3. Minimize UV damage – Sun exposure accelerates the appearance of aged skin. A peel procedure can remove spots and wrinkles caused by sun damage, reversing those effects to give you a more youthful look.
  4. Improve Hyperpigmentation – A peel can reduce the appearance of dark spots by removing unwanted melanin from the skin’s surface. When new skin forms, it can appear more evenly pigmented and less spotty.
  5. Restore Skin Moisture – Dry and flaky skin often results from damaged or underactive sebaceous glands in the dermis. Getting a derma peel will remove dead cells and stimulate underactive glands to retain skin moisture.
